It's no secret that many companies collect data about you. Some, like banks and phone companies, have been collecting such information for decades. We're used to it and, mostly, accept it.

But the internet has given rise to a host of very large, very powerful, and largely unaccountable entities like Google that collect a huge amount of information about you every single day. And it's long since crossed the line from simple and useful to downright creepy.
